Boston’s South Shore Top Design and Build Talent
Located next to the main entrance of this home, this awkwardly placed bland room was experiencing an identity crisis the clients were hoping to correct. Avid readers and collectors, the clients had curated an impressive collection of antique books. They spent most evenings reading by the fire and wanted this space to reflect their interests while making a statement. This dictated the design concept transforming the space into a library/study worthy of a stunning first impression.
The homeowners book collection is now proudly displayed within newly installed custom bookcases. Window benches and wainscot paneling outfit any remaining space. Curvaceous crown molding and coffered beams encase the entire room in detail. Glass pocket doors enhance the entrance signaling an opening to a special space. Brass lighting and colorful artwork pop above the double-sided fireplace. Nestled almost invisibly into the shelving is a small study desk. A mysterious teal blue finishes the room with a moody flare. Two perfectly proportional chairs allow the homeowners to continue their reading ritual in a completely re-imagined space. Visitors are at once intrigued and enticed into entering this new enclave.
The visual aesthetic of the new library/ study was then transposed into other areas of the house and served as the style guide for the rest of the first-floor remodel. This application was most notably used in the kitchen where a piece of the library/ study room was replicated in the far end of the room to serve as a breakfast reading nook. Instead of a flat wall, the corner now includes a comfortable booth with padded cushions that match the color of the library/ study room and sit below a large set of built in book shelves. What to do when faced with the problem of not yet being prepared to insert the bookmark but also not wanting to bring meals into the library/ study room? The reimaging of the space brings with it a clear solution — take the literary adventure to the kitchen!
Other remodeled areas of the home include both a powder and laundry room that each showcase design characteristics that not only extend the chosen aesthetic but also make the first floor almost completely unrecognizable from its previous version.
